Within each of us dwells a desire to find meaning beyond the moment, to discover our true selves, to grow closer to God, and to develop meaningful connections to one another. A spiritual director or companion can help you satisfy that longing and walk with you on your journey.
What is spiritual direction?
Spiritual direction encourages you to explore a relationship with the Mystery many people name God. In the midst of our hectic lives, many find it difficult to notice God’s action in their daily affairs. Yet, at our deepest level, all of us long for a more conscious experience, a more mindful interaction in our lives.
In spiritual direction, you reflect deeply on the experiences of your daily life. Gradually, as you contemplate your life, you may begin to see and recognize God’s presence and grace in your life. You may come to realize God’s spirit is truly with you every day and everywhere. You discover that God has been seeking you as much as you have been seeking God.
Spiritual direction is not about being directed or told what to do or how to see God working or even to name the Mystery as God! A spiritual director provides a safe, confidential place, and a listening ear for you to explore and discern what is already inside you. I offer to companion and listen across all faiths, denominations, and spiritual backgrounds.
Why do spiritual direction?
You might come to spiritual direction for a variety of reasons including to:
• Identify and trust your own spiritual experiences
• Integrate spirituality in your daily life and find meaning
• Discern and make difficult choices
• Share your hopes, struggles, and losses
• Develop a sensitivity for justice and concern for the poor and respond by action
• Live the essence of your spiritual affiliation with integrity and deeper commitment
How do I meet with a Spiritual Director?
I am privileged to walk with others on their spiritual journeys. The privilege and responsibility of a spiritual direction is to journey with people as they deepen their relationships with God, the Universe, the Other. I have received formation and training in theology and pastoral ministries and in the art of spiritual direction and continually tend to my own spiritual life through prayer, reflection, meditation, workshops, retreats, my own spiritual direction, and ongoing confidential supervision.
A spiritual direction session takes place in a confidential one-one-one setting. We will typically meet once a month for about an hour. The initial meeting is a discernment session to get a sense of whether we wish to continue and to explore together the frequency and commitment that would be most supportive for you. Fees for sessions are determined at our first meeting. There is no fee for the first session. After three or four sessions, we will have the opportunity to evaluate the relationship and determine whether we wish to continue. Whether our relationship continues for many years or only for a short period of time, it is very important to be comfortable with the spiritual director you choose.
I also provide group sessions for those who have experienced a shared spiritual experience such as a retreat or workshop and desire to continue their spiritual journey together. If you are interested in forming or joining a spiritual direction group, please contact me to explore the best way to move forward.
